As of this weekend I bought the car exactly 19 months ago. It's been 40,000 hoontastic, trouble free miles.
Time to do a DIY 40k service (oil change, fuel filter, cabin filter, haldex fluid). I may also look into getting a carbon clean done, and I need to inspect the contents of my catch can.

Does this engine have the cam follower issue or was that resolved?

Still very tempted to get one, just can't get past the fact that it's more expensive than a C6 with 15k miles on it by a pretty large margin.
The polish and interior of a VW still tempts me though, I loved the interior of my Jetta, the entertainment system was very high quality.

This one does have the cam follower issue.
To me, it's not a big deal. It's a five minute job and a 40 dollar part.

You're comparing a spacious german 4 seater AWD hatchback to a rear drive american 2-seater coupe...
So, do you want an apple or an orange?

It's a manual too.

Very, very nice. I got an LGT sedan :). Are they both yours?

No, the Outback belong's to my buddy's girlfriend. They both have red, manual, (edit: turbocharged) subaru wagons.

I'm just comparing the cost of either, since they both fit my needs just fine. I don't have kids, or adverse weather, so at the end of the day a good payment rate is what I'm looking for.
I've always been a pineapple guy myself...

I don't have kids, but I ski, and I do a lot of outdoorsy activities. I also don't have room for more than one car.
(I'm also more than a bit of a eurosnob)

I may be doing that in my Jetta next week.

for sure, was just wondering. Being so cheap is probably what makes people overlook it

please tell me more about the catch can? Our '08 Passat Wagon has 90K and we just had the intake flapper thingy go bad, and I was researching it and some people mentioned how much oil can grime up the intake and a catch can.

Can you elaborate on 40k "trouble free miles"? I'm extremely tempted to buy one of these as my next car, but VW reliability scares me. Also, can you give me a little insight on the cargo space offered? I see you have a roof rack, so obviously not everything can fit. What have you been able to squeeze in the back with the seats up/down? And lastly, how does it do in the snow? Since (from the comments) I read that there are 2 manual Subaru wagons in your driveway, have the Subarus ever been able to get through snow where your R hasn't?
Thanks!

trouble free means just that...trouble free. No engine or transmission or electrical issues, nothing has required warranty repairs, and it has never broken down on me.
I have a cargo box because IMO it's always nice to have one. I had one for my A4 Avant as well. I use it for transporting skis and such; in general I prefer not to let grimy skis get stored in the cabin, and if I'm transporting more than one friend then they don't really fit. My skis are very long (192cm), but I have been able to fit them in the back diagonally with both rear seats folded.
I can fit a 42inch TV in there, upright. My bike fits upright with the front wheel removed. I'm 6'4" and a 6 foot plus friend of mine was comfortable sitting behind me. I can fit an extra set of wheels and tires in there.
So far the R has been able to get anywhere that the Subarus can. Haldex IV works very, very well. With the ESC defeat mod you can do snow doughnuts all day.

Great, that's all the info I was hoping to hear! If everything goes to plan I'll be the proud owner of one of these someday

it replaces the positive crankcase ventilation system. they can fail ocasionally, and the catch can also catches fine oil and water vapors not captured by the PCV and prevents them from reentering the intake tract.
I use this one by Black Forest Industries.
(note: not my car)

Ahh. So it's not dealing with oil from the turbo seals or some such, but PCV. Thanks for that, makes much more sense. I figured the oil and grime was coming from the turbo.
I rigged something similar (but much scarier) on my '80 Rabbit Diesel. It would puddle up oil in the intake, then the puddle would overflow into the engine and it would zoom away, running on oil. I stuffed the PCV hose into a washer fluid bottle, then back out to the intake. It would get about half full for every tank of fuel. I'd pour it right back into the oil fill ;)

Well, living in an area with that much snow, having AWD makes absolutely perfect sense. Nothing wrong with being a eurosnob, I was raised around BMWs, VW, and Porsches, as well as Corvettes and a Mustang SVO. I guess I don't harbor any strong feelings for any brand in particular.

Is that issue isolated to the R or does it occur on the GTI as well?

It is an issue for the FSI engines (MKV GTI, TT-S, Golf R, B7 A4 2.0T, etc...). Any other current or upcoming models do not have this issue.

So it will be fixed on the Mk7? What did they do to fix it (forgive me, I have not fully researched the issue).
Saracen

like I said "current or upcoming models do not have this issue"
The issue was fixed when the FSI (engine code EA113) motor was replaced with the TSI (EA888) motor. The EA888 is pretty much a completely new motor. The EA113 used a flat tappet cam follower and the EA888 uses a roller cam follower. The last two production cars to use the EA113 engine are the Golf R and the TT-S. The MK7 uses the third generation of the EA888 so it will not be an issue.
